Jonathan Ball Lettering Design

Process

My lettering process can be broken into four distinct phases. Each phase—which may consist of multiple rounds—is outlined below. If you have any questions please let me know.

  1. Phases

  2. 1. Ideation
  3. 2. Refinement
  4. 3. Vector
  5. 4. Finalization

1 Ideation

I begin the design process by exploring a broad range of solutions based upon the project goals and the direction you provide. I continue to explore, refine, and eliminate concepts until only the best remain. I then present 3–5 rough sketches for your review along with contextual mockups (when applicable). You provide feedback and select 1–2 sketches to be refined in the next phase.

2 Refinement

In the refinement phase I create refined sketches for each of the selected direction(s). I explore a few different treatments, flesh out further details, and present the best options in grayscale for your review. If it doesn't work in grayscale, color isn't going to help. You provide feedback and select one direction to be created in vector and color in the next phase.

3 Vector

During this phase I digitize the selected sketch by creating a vector drawing. I improve the sketch by exploring variations, balancing any typographic inconsistencies, and adding finer details. I present the vector in grayscale for approval along with 2-3 color options. You provide feedback and select one color option for the final phase.

4 Finalization

I make any minor revisions you request and send a presentation for final approval. Once approved, I send you the final deliverable files along with a final invoice for the project. We then toast to our success.
